The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) has elected Dr Mrs Abigail Agartha Kyei, the acting Head of Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Pentecost University College (PUC) as its new President and inducted her into office.

The newly elected President polled 96% of the total votes cast at the college’s recent third Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Pentecost Convention Centre at Gomoah Fetteh.

The election was conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana and had Dr Mrs Kyei as the only candidate.

She takes over from Dr Mrs Jemima Dennis Antwi, the first President of the College who served for two terms. The presidency of GCNM is a three-year tenure renewable for two terms.

Dr Mrs Kyei has over 30 years’ experience managing large-scale health programmes in several institutions including the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the Danish Development Agency (Danida) and the Malawian and Ghanaian Ministries of Health.

She currently works as an independent consultant in Public Health, Midwifery, Maternal and Child Health and Health Management.

Education

Dr Mrs Kyei had her secondary school education at the Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast and her first degree in Nursing from the University of Ghana, Legon.

She holds a Master’s in Public Health (Maternal & Child Health Concentration) from the San Diego State University, California, in the United States of America and a Doctorate in Health Administration from the University of Phoenix, in Arizona, USA.

She is described as a woman committed to rendering services to the cause of women and children and training of health workers particularly nurses and midwives in developing countries, more especially in her home country of Ghana.

Acceptance speech

In her acceptance speech after her induction, Dr Mrs Kyei said her vision was to support and provide leadership to the college in line with its motto of “Integrity, Professionalism and Excellence” by translating it to reflect in the day-to-day lives of fellows and products of the college.
