The Technical University Workers Association (TUWAG) has threatened to embark on a strike on the 1st of November, 2019 over the government’s failure to place its members on the current Single Spine Salary Structure.
TUWAG, in a statement signed by the National President Nana Kwapong Offei- Boohene, said the Ministry of Education failed to meet their demands for the migration of Technical Universities (TUs) onto the Public University Pay Structure as contained in a communique dated 28th September 2018 and a letter dated 5th August 2018.
“On 28th September 2018, a communique for the migration for teacher unions onto the Public University Pay Structure was jointly signed by TUTAG and TUWAG on one hand and the Government of Ghana representatives on the other hand. This roadmap led to the audit of qualifications of senior members of the teacher unions which was completed over 12 months ago. The audit was used to unfairly downgrade many qualified senior members of the teacher unions.”
“We are of the view that the Ministry of Education does not hold any regard to our demand as contained in our letter dated 5th August 2018 and the communique as mentioned above, by excluding us from any discussions on the migration since then. It is, therefore, our request for instant placement of members of Technical Universities Workers Associations on the current Single Spine Salary Structure and Circulation of Service for public universities in Ghana,” he said.
TUWAG said the failure of the government to migrate them onto the obligatory pay structure that applies to the public universities has led to tensions on various campuses.
They are therefore joining three other Teacher Unions- the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) in their strike on 1ST November 2019 if their demands are not met.
“At our Executive Board Meeting held on 24th October 2019, at Accra Technical University, we resolved to invoke section 168 (1) of Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) to join the other unions in technical universities with immediate effect.”
“However, the Union has officially written to the Labour Commission, notifying them of our intention to embark on our own strike effective 1st November 2019 if our demands are not met,” he said.
