The Ministry of Health has referred the case of Joy Gyaten, a driver who failed to deliver a consignment of approximately three million condoms and other contraceptives valued at 1.3 million cedis to the Eastern Regional Medical Stores in 2022, to the police for further investigation.
The driver, who is currently retired and in poor health, is under investigation for his role in the missing consignment.
The Ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, Emma Ofori Agyemang, during a Public Accounts Committee sitting revealed that the incident was reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the driver was initially arrested but later bailed.
Mrs Agyemang explained that the driver had a stroke and was very ill, but the Ministry is currently cooperating with the CID to ensure a logical conclusion to the case.
She noted that the docket is currently with the Attorney General’s office, and the Ministry is waiting for a response.
James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee called on the Ministry to take significant action to recover the funds.
“The driver immediately thereafter had a stroke, was very ill, but has also retired.”
“Honourable, because we reported to the CID and they are also cooperating with us, we felt we should also cooperate with them as much as possible.
“We sent a reminder to them that the matter has been delayed and we called again. They have responded that the docket is at the AG. So we are just waiting for a logical conclusion before we can speak to the AG.”
