Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, the Secretary to the Okyehene, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change (M4C), and Media General over comments made regarding the “Agyapadie” document.
According to a writ of summons dated August 14, Mr Adorye was granted an “unfettered and unrestrained opportunity” on Media General’s “Onua Maakye” programme to provide commentary on the “Agyapadie” document.
During the broadcast, Mr Adorye allegedly stated: “…I mentioned it. D.M. Ofori Atta. It stated that he is a co-writer. He is a friend of mine and I know him and if you glance at the page that talks about the hijacking of GBC (laughs), it will never work. Now the judiciary governance in Ghana (laughs). It has been stated here in the document. Let’s pack the court so that in the next twenty years they can be in control. Are you surprised more people are being nominated to the Supreme Court?”
In response to these statements, Mr. Ofori-Atta is seeking the following legal remedies:
- A court declaration that the words uttered by Mr Adorye on Onua TV are defamatory.
- Recovery of GH¢10 million in damages.
- A public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements.
- An injunction preventing the defendants and their agents from making or repeating similar defamatory remarks.
