The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations has requested clarification from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the party’s manifesto promise to introduce free tertiary education for persons with disabilities (PWDs) if it wins the 2024 general elections.
During the launch of its manifesto in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, the NPP hinted at providing scholarships for PWDs as a way to eliminate the financial barriers to higher education.
However, in an interview with Citi News, the national president of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, Joseph Atsu Homadzi, raised concerns about how the party plans to cover the cost of accommodation and other fees associated with tertiary education.
“When they say free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, what exactly are the issues? What is the modality? Free, is it for only the facility user fee? What about accommodation? Is the accommodation fee also going to be free? What about other fees? We want to know the details. Assistive devices, are they also part of it? So when they say free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, we want to know the details.
“The areas it will cover and all the components of the free they are talking about. We need to get the breakdowns, then we can properly address the issue or comment on it.”
