I’ll assent to anti-LGBTQ bill if declared constitutional – Bawumia promises

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to signing the anti-LGBTQ bill into law if it is deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court.

The bill, currently awaiting a ruling from the Court, has faced delays, prompting calls for expedited proceedings from various stakeholders, including the Osu Traditional Council and Samuel Nartey George, the bill’s lead advocate.

The Supreme Court has postponed its decision on injunction applications aimed at preventing the bill from being sent to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent, opting to issue the ruling alongside the final judgment.

In a recent media engagement, Dr. Bawumia affirmed that he would promptly sign the bill once it receives constitutional clearance.

He stated, “I think that is very, very important. The Bill is before the Supreme Court right now and I think there are certain challenges that have been made to it that is to say that it’s not consistent with the constitution.”

“Of course, we’ll wait for it to come and once it’s out of the Supreme Court and they declare it as constitutional, I believe signing is automatic, there shouldn’t be any issue. No ifs and no buts, we won’t allow.”
