On Friday, August 23, 2024, Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko, the 2023 Miss Malaika Ghana, visited Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO) in the Central Region to promote her HIV prevention campaign, “Live On,” co-sponsored by UNFPA and ABOTT.
During her visit, Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko engaged the students with an inspiring message on HIV prevention. The students were enthusiastic and attentive as she addressed them.
Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies and to avoid distractions, particularly from sexual relationships that could hinder their educational goals.
She also encouraged them to lead the fight against HIV, emphasising the importance of their involvement in the campaign for sustainable economic growth.
The interactive programme covered the significance of knowing one’s HIV status and dispelling fears and misconceptions surrounding the virus.
The beauty queen stressed the importance of resilience against sexual temptations and getting tested to know one’s HIV status.
“I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm you have shown in this campaign. Let us join hands to lead the fight against HIV. Our resilience against any sexual temptations and getting tested to know our HIV status is key in this fight. Education and knowledge are powerful tools in the fight against HIV,” she noted.
She highlighted the availability of antiretroviral therapy drugs for treatment and underscored early care in preventing HIV complications.
Under the leadership of Ms. Golda Esi Andam, the headmistress of SWESCO, the students delivered a compelling and educational play addressing critical aspects of HIV prevention, modes of transmission, and the need to combat stigmatization. The performance was both riveting and enlightening, driving home the message that knowledge and empathy are key to halting the spread of HIV.
The event was graced by distinguished personalities who shared their expertise and experiences with the eager audience.
Dr. Chief Nat Ebo Narko, a leading figure in health advocacy, spoke passionately about the importance of sustained education and the role of young people in shaping a healthier future.
Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, the National AIDS/STI Programme Manager on behalf of the Ghana Health Service, provided invaluable insights into current trends in HIV prevention and the significance of early testing and treatment.
Ms. Golda Esi Andam, in her address, expressed pride in her students’ active participation and encouraged them to be ambassadors of change within their communities.
The “Live On” campaign continued with outreach programs at Swedru Business School and Apam Senior High School, ensuring that the vital message of HIV prevention reached more young minds across the Central Region.
The team also visited the market, where head porters were treated to an amazing performance on ways to stay healthy and prevent the spread of HIV. They received thousands of condoms, self-test kits, and insecticide bed nets.
