W/R: Damang Mine reclaims 36% of disturbed land

Amidst fears of environmental devastation by local communities due to mining activities within the Damang area of the Western Region, 523 out of the 1,054 hectares of disturbed concession due to operations of the Damang mine have been reclaimed by the mines.

The gradual reclamation welcomed by communities in the catchment is also ensuring sustainable alternative livelihoods with use of the reclaimed mining concessions for vulnerable residents within the mine’s vicinity.

Gold is a cherished resource, but its extraction processes come with some devastation to the environment, therefore the issue of reclamation is critical throughout mining operations or at the end of the lifespan of a mine.

In the absence of no further investment in the operations of the Abosso Goldfields Limited Damang Mine in the Western Region to continue exploration and mining, the mine will be coming to the end of its lifespan by 2025.

It is for this reason the subject of reclamation of its impacted concession has become critical.

At an Open House Forum on rehabilitation planning for mine closure aimed at involving locals and opinion leaders, the Mine says it has so far reclaimed over 36 percent of impacted concession and also posted a security bond of $25million in case of failure to reclaim the disturbed lands due to its operations.

A tour of the claimed concession revealed replanted vegetation, fruiting coconuts, vegetables, palm trees among others covering an area of over 523 hectares in the Damang area.
