Cholera Outbreak: Take action before you handover – Minority to govt

Ghana risks facing a cholera epidemic before the new administration assumes office if the Akufo-Addo government fails to act decisively, the Minority in Parliament has warned.

The caucus revealed that as of December 17, 2024, 123 cases and 15 deaths had been recorded in the Western Region, with 15 health workers infected while treating patients.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Friday, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, criticized what he described as gross negligence by the government. He argued that the same inaction that contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat must not be allowed to exacerbate this public health crisis.

“Without immediate and decisive interventions, Ghana risks facing a full-blown cholera epidemic before the incoming administration takes over from the outgoing NPP regime,” Akandoh warned.

He added, “It is deeply concerning that what could have been a minor cholera outbreak has instead exposed the fragility of our healthcare system. This outbreak, which should have been controlled weeks ago, continues to escalate due to systemic neglect and inefficiency.”

Akandoh urged the government to act swiftly and decisively to address these challenges by ensuring resources are adequately allocated and health workers are provided with the support they need to contain the outbreak.
