The Chamber of Construction Industry has criticized the government for failing to allocate funds to settle the GH₵21 billion debt owed to road contractors.
During a parliamentary debate on the 2025 budget estimate for the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu raised concerns about the lack of plans to clear the outstanding road fund debt.
Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, March 27, the Chamber’s CEO, Emmanuel Cherry, urged the government to address the issue to prevent the construction industry from collapsing.
He warned that neglecting the sector’s financial struggles could damage the government’s public standing.
“If NDC comes to inherit the entire government structure of the country, then they have the obligations and responsibility to honour the debt obligation. All we are saying is that we have worked for the government, and we need payment to be made available for the contractors.
“So there must be a budget allocation; any other thing contrary to this will make the government of the day unpopular,”he stated.
