Residents of Dakodwom-TUC in the Ashanti Region are growing increasingly anxious about possible displacement and property destruction as the rainy season approaches.
Tagged as a flood-prone area, Dakodwom-TUC faces heightened risks due to unchecked encroachment on watercourses and blocked drainage systems. The problem has worsened due to continued encroachment and unregulated construction along water channels.
The residents are appealing to the government for urgent intervention to protect their homes and livelihoods before disaster strikes.
During a recent visit by Channel One News, a two-storey building was spotted under construction dangerously close to a major drainage path. Portions of the area have also been filled and prepared for new buildings. On the opposite side of the road, a fuel station stands, and just behind it, more construction is underway.

Residents complained that anytime it rains, the area is submerged, hindering movement and allowing floodwaters to enter homes and destroy belongings. The situation becomes even more severe during heavy downpours.
They warned that without immediate intervention, the flooding would escalate, causing more damage and putting lives at risk.
“The government should be able to stop the construction on waterways,” the residents.
They urged authorities to enforce building regulations and safeguard critical drainage infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Dakodwom, Nana Kwesi Aful I, dismissed claims that traditional leaders are selling land illegally to developers.
He expressed frustration over the situation and called for stakeholder dialogue.

He also appealed to the government to step in and reclaim encroached lands to avert future disasters.
In a related development, Dr. Stephen Appiah-Takyi, a senior lecturer and urban planner, urged the government to strictly enforce regulations that prevent construction on wetlands.

He criticized the growing politicization of land issues, warning that it undermines effective flood control and long-term planning.
Attempts to obtain official responses from relevant authorities have so far proven unsuccessful.
