Galamsey Fight: Ex-EPA Boss slams govt strategy as mere media hype

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Dr John Kingsley Krugu has criticised the Mahama-led administration’s approach to fighting illegal mining popularly know as galamsey.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, April 8, he underscored that the Akufo-Addo-led administration established a structural blueprint in the various government institutions and sector ministries aimed at effectively addressing the devastating impact of illegal mining activities.

Dr. Krugu accused the government of prioritising flashy publicity stunts over meaningful action to tackle the issue head-on.

“At the moment, I am afraid that there is not yet a coherent plan or approach to dealing with the matter. What I see is a titbit of media hype; when the Minister for Lands gather the media and says, ‘We are going to fight Galamsey, we are going to fight it’. That is not going to deal with the issue of galamsey,” he said.

Dr. Krugu emphasizes the importance of building on existing initiatives to tackle the galamsey menace.

While acknowledging the role of media engagement, he suggests that adapting the previous administration’s blueprint could be key to success.
