Africa Institute warns against disclosing national security funds

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security has raised serious concerns over what it describes as a dangerous trend of exposing sensitive national security financial information in the public domain, warning of dire implications for Ghana’s stability and international cooperation.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Governance Specialist and Security Strategist Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, the Institute condemned the recent disclosure of classified financial documents linked to national security operations.

The development, it said, stems from the Attorney General’s decision to pursue legal action through the media, prompting senior public servant Kwabena Adu-Boahene to release sensitive materials in his defense.

“This alarming practice poses significant threats to Ghana’s national security architecture,” the statement read.

Among the Institute’s concerns was the compromise of operational integrity, as publicly shared financial details could expose strategic plans and funding allocations. The erosion of public trust was also cited, with fears that politicising security matters in the media could damage confidence in state institutions and weaken collective national resolve.

Additionally, the Institute warned that such disclosures risk the endangerment of personnel and assets, potentially exposing covert operatives, informants, or critical infrastructure. It also cautioned that the leaks may deter international cooperation, as global partners might become reluctant to share intelligence or engage in joint operations with Ghana.

The Institute called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through established legal and institutional frameworks rather than public platforms.

“We urge all parties to prioritise the sanctity of national security. Matters of such sensitivity should be handled away from the public eye to protect Ghana’s safety and strategic interests,” the statement concluded.
