The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a stern warning to DecoBuild, operators at the Madina Lorry Park, to immediately cease the collection of unauthorised tolls from commercial drivers.
According to the Union, DecoBuild has been operating a “pay-as-you-go” toll system in recent months, which has placed an undue financial burden on drivers.
Unlike the standard one-time daily toll, drivers are now forced to pay multiple times in a single day.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, May 9, GPRTU gave the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly a one-week ultimatum to intervene and enforce proper toll regulations at the station.
The Union further warned that if the situation is not resolved, passengers should expect a 10% increase in transport fares as operators attempt to offset their losses.
“We are pleading with the La Kwantanang Municipal Assembly to take this up, and we are giving them one week from now. If they are unable to do it, then we would have to advise our people to increase our lorry fares by 10% to recover those costs. It is in our hope and belief that those in authority will take it up,”he added.
