Honour your promise, reinstate our contracts – Caterers to Mahama

The School Feeding Caterers Association has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to reverse what they describe as the abrupt and unexpected termination of their contracts, calling the move a betrayal of campaign promises.

The appeal follows a directive from the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), issued in a statement dated May 2, 2025, which announced the immediate termination of contracts for all caterers nationwide. The GSFP further instructed that no existing caterer should provide meals for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, May 2, the Association’s President, Nana Otu Sakyi-Amo, expressed deep frustration with the decision, saying it has left many caterers in financial distress just days before schools reopen.

“We are still pleading with the president, we are all crying to the president to cancel this immediate termination of our contract,” Sakyi-Amo said. “We know that we have a contract up to August, and this is sudden news to us.”

She explained that caterers had already invested heavily in food supplies for the new term, which begins next Tuesday, and were awaiting official guidance from the GSFP when the termination notice came.

“We have bought our foodstuff, and school is reopening next week on Tuesday. We have prepared ourselves… We just heard they have cancelled our contracts just like that,” she lamented.

Sakyi-Amo also accused the government of reneging on commitments made to caterers during President Mahama’s campaign, particularly regarding improvements to the programme.

“This is not the promise he [Mahama] gave to school feeding caterers,” she said. “He promised that when he comes, he will put things in place, he will increase feeding grants, which he has done, and make sure caterers are well taken care of. I don’t think he promised to put us into debt.”

The Association is now demanding an immediate reversal of the decision, warning that the move could result in significant financial losses and disrupt the delivery of meals to schoolchildren across the country.
