The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has donated GHS 45,200 to the Kibi School for the Deaf to support student feeding through to the end of the academic term in July, following an urgent appeal from school authorities.
The intervention comes after the school reported severe financial constraints due to delays in receiving government-allocated feeding grants.
Headmaster Mr. Kumah Cephas had earlier disclosed that the institution was struggling to feed its students, raising alarm over the welfare of the children.
During a brief presentation ceremony, Dr. Agyemang described the situation as heartbreaking and stressed the urgency of the support.
“It is painful to hear that children might go without food till the end of the term. This support is to make sure that never happens,” he said.
The MP explained that although government policy allocates GHS 5 per day per student for feeding, the school had not received funds in months.
The Abuakwa South New Patriotic Party (NPP) mobilised resources to bridge the gap, resulting in the GHS 45,200 donation.
Dr. Agyemang also called on churches, mosques, and traditional leaders in the municipality to actively support special needs institutions like Kibi School for the Deaf.
“We have more than 200 churches and over 20 mosques in this municipality. We’ll start a community dialogue to make the care of these schools a collective responsibility,” he added.
Headmaster Kumah Cephas expressed deep appreciation for the MP’s swift response, highlighting that this is not the first time Dr. Agyemang has supported the school.
“He previously donated GHS 5,000 to help repair our school bus. We are truly grateful,” he said.
Mr. Cephas also noted that the school had made notable academic progress, reaching the quarterfinals in a recent mathematics and science quiz competition for the first time.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Comfort Ofori Appiah, who was present at the event, commended the donation and raised additional concerns about teacher shortages and inadequate accommodation that continue to impact the delivery of quality education.
Dr. Agyemang concluded by pledging continued support to the school and urged all stakeholders to help strengthen the foundation of inclusive and specialised education in Ghana.
