Ablekuma North rerun chaos a stain on Ghana’s democracy – Akosua Manu

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Adentan, Akosua Manu, has strongly condemned the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, describing the incident as a “stain on Ghana’s democracy.”

The rerun, held on Friday, July 11, was meant to resolve a long-standing electoral dispute following the 2024 general elections. However, it was marred by chaos when a group of unidentified thugs stormed the St Peter’s polling center, physically assaulting NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and Hawa Koomson, while disrupting the electoral process.

Journalists covering the event were also assaulted, sparking nationwide outrage and renewed concern about the safety of media professionals and political actors during elections.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday July 13, he criticised the assault on key political figures, party agents, and members of the press during the rerun exercise, calling the scenes that unfolded “disgraceful” and “unacceptable.”

“Let me begin by condemning in the strongest possible terms the violence that occurred in the recent rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.

“The brutal attack on former Minister, former Member of Parliament Hawa Koomson, the candidate herself Hon. Nana Akua Afriyie, and the manhandling of party agents and journalists was disgraceful, unacceptable and a stain on our democracy,” she said.
