The Wa Municipality is determined to reclaim its past glory as Ghana’s cleanest city, a title it last held in 2006.
This renewed ambition follows a massive sanitation campaign launched by the Wa Municipal Assembly on Saturday, July 13, 2025.
The Assembly hopes to achieve its vision of making Wa Ghana’s cleanest city once again by rekindling the communal spirit and instilling a culture of regular sanitation.
The exercise, christened the “Mayor’s Major Cleanup Exercise: Operation Clean Your Frontage,” was initiated by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Nura Issah Danwanaa. It brought together residents from all 31 electoral areas of the municipality in a competitive effort to clean their communities.
At the end of the exercise, the Nayiri/Limanyiri Electoral Area emerged as the cleanest among the participating communities. Their efforts were recognised as a model for others to emulate in future cleanup activities.
Speaking to the media after the event, Alhaji Nura Issah Danwanaa reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to making Wa one of the cleanest cities in Ghana once again.
“We once won this in 2006 as the cleanest city in Ghana, and we believe that we can attain this feat again,” he said.
“This exercise is not just a one-off event. We want to be ahead of the National Sanitation Day, which will be observed on the first Saturday of every month. We have seen a lot of mess, and as a metropolitan assembly, there is a need for us to mobilise our people to come out and clean this mess,” the MCE added.
The MCE explained that the “Mayor’s Major Cleanup Exercise” focuses on the simple yet powerful idea of encouraging residents to clean the front of their homes and businesses. According to him, the Assembly is committed to sustaining the campaign and promoting a clean, healthy environment for all residents.
“We ask all the electoral areas to come out in their numbers and clean their frontage. This is an exercise we want to sustain. We want to ensure that Wa becomes the next cleanest city when the government starts the National Sanitation Day,” He stressed.
Community leaders from Nayiri/Limanyiri attributed their success to teamwork, early mobilisation, and a collective desire to improve sanitation in their area. Residents, both young and old, took part in desilting gutters, sweeping streets, and disposing of waste.
Other electoral areas have also pledged to intensify their sanitation efforts in upcoming cleanup events, aiming to dethrone Nayiri/Limanyiri in the next round.
The Wa Municipal Assembly plans to hold similar cleanup exercises on the first Saturday of every month. The initiative is expected to improve sanitation, prevent disease outbreaks, and restore Wa’s reputation as a clean and healthy city.
