The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into violent clashes that occurred during the climax of the Homowo Festival at Anyaa and Sowutuom on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

According to a press release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the violence reportedly began during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the ceremonial food of the festival.

A misunderstanding between supporters of two rival chiefs led to an exchange of gunfire, throwing the celebration into chaos.

The incident escalated further when some festival attendees attempted to leave the grounds, resulting in more attacks at nearby Olebu.

Three people have been confirmed dead. They are Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

Their bodies have been taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Four others sustained injuries. They are Enoch Amevor (treated and discharged), Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku and Frederick Lartey, also known as Nii Obrafour.

The injured are receiving care at medical facilities, including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

In response to the unrest, the police have deployed more officers to restore calm and ensure public safety. Intelligence-led operations are underway to identify and arrest all individuals involved in the violence.

The police command has also issued a strong warning to traditional leaders and their supporters, urging them to strictly adhere to agreed security arrangements to prevent further disturbances.
