The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has cautioned event organisers, churches, corporate institutions and social groups to formally apply for a permit from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) before blocking any road within the metropolis for their activities to avoid sanctions.
He stressed that no individual or organisation has the mandate to obstruct a public road without the Assembly’s approval, noting that such actions contribute to heavy traffic, obstruct emergency routes and pose risks to public safety.
He issued the warning during a meeting of the Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) on Tuesday, November 18, where security agencies and city authorities reviewed Accra’s safety, traffic and sanitation situation ahead of the Christmas season.
He said the Assembly would, from now on, strictly enforce road-use regulations, adding that persons who flout the directive would be sanctioned.
Mr Allotey reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining law and order, enhancing urban mobility and ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents. He urged the public to comply with existing regulations and cooperate with city authorities.
He also appealed to institutions to respect Accra’s road-use laws, obtain the required permits and work with the Assembly in the interest of public safety.
