Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie vows to tackle court delays, ensure fairness

Newly sworn-in Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has pledged to decisively confront long-standing concerns about delays and fairness in Ghana’s justice delivery system.

Speaking after his swearing-in on Monday, November 17, the Chief Justice acknowledged the growing dissatisfaction among Ghanaians regarding the sluggish pace of justice and issues of access to the courts.

“In recent times, many Ghanaians have expressed concern about delays, access, and perception of fairness in our courts. I wish to confront those concerns head-on,” he stated.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stressed that fairness must not only be perceived but must be evident in the daily conduct of the judiciary.

He outlined key priorities, including clearing case backlogs, reforming processes, harnessing technology, and creating an environment where ordinary citizens can approach the courts with confidence.

“These are not optional add-ons, but they are imperatives,” he emphasised.

He further articulated a vision of a “service-oriented institution,” where courts operate efficiently, transparently, and respectfully, urging judges and staff to uphold the highest ethical standards and apply the law “without fear or favour,” ensuring a judiciary that works not for political ends but for the cause of justice.
