The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs has bestowed the traditional stool name ‘Nii Yehowada’ on the Duke of Edinburgh, His Royal Highness Prince Edward, in recognition of the enduring relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

During the Duke’s working visit to the Jubilee House on Tuesday, November 25, President of the Regional House of Chiefs, Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, said the honour reflects the shared history of the two nations and a commitment to future collaboration.

King Welentsi emphasised that while the relationship between Ghana and the UK is shaped by historical experiences, the focus now is on mutual interests in trade, climate action, education, and sustainable development.

He further lauded the Duke’s achievements in academia, charitable work, and public service, noting that these accomplishments inspired the chiefs’ decision.

“It brings the people of Greater Accra great joy to bestow a name upon His Royal Highness, Prince Edward. From the depth of our heart, we name you today Nii Yehowada, which means ‘God is great’,” he stated.

He added that the occasion underscores the importance of preserving cultural traditions while fostering deeper partnerships between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
