VEEP commends NGOs for supporting girls’ menstrual health

The Office of the Vice President has praised the efforts of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private associations for their continued support in addressing menstrual health challenges faced by girls in rural communities.

According to the office, nearly one in four girls in northern rural communities miss school due to a lack of access to sanitary products and poor hygiene facilities.

The office also highlighted the negative impact on their academic performance and their exposure to health risks from the use of unsafe alternatives.

Speaking at the Women in Gospel Music Gratitude 2025 event on Monday, November 3, Press Secretary at the Office of the Vice President, Ama Pratt, commended the Women in Gospel Music Group (WIGM) for its initiative to provide sanitary towels to young girls.

She described the gesture as a reflection of the Mahama-led administration’s ongoing commitment to improve the well-being and education of women and girls across the country.

“I also applaud your team’s thoughtful initiative to support young girls in the community with sanitary towels. Approximately one in four girls in the rural northern communities miss school during their menstrual period, leading to significant learning losses and decreased confidence.

“The root cause of this problem lies in the limited access to sanitary pads and poor school sanitation and hygienic facilities. Many girls are forced to use less safe materials, which increases the risk of infection and other health complications. This initiative lies perfectly with the ongoing effort under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama,” she said.
