Ghana needs leadership rooted in stewardship, not ego – Sir Sam Jonah

The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Sir Sam Jonah, has called for leadership rooted in stewardship, integrity, and service, urging both the university community and graduates to place the long-term interest of institutions and society above personal ambition.

Speaking at the 58th Congregation during the graduation of the Class of 2025, Sir Sam Jonah emphasised that the current moment demands leadership that unites rather than divides and respects institutional processes and succession.

“The leadership required now is clear. Not leadership driven by ego, but leadership rooted in stewardship. Not leadership that divides, but leadership that unites,” he said. “Institutions thrive when leaders respect rules, honour succession, and place the long-term interest of the institution above personal ambition. That is the leadership this moment demands.”

Addressing the graduating class, the Chancellor reminded them that their degrees carry more than academic value; they are instruments of service.

He urged graduates to let integrity guide their actions, let excellence define their work, and let the impact of their contributions be the measure of their success.

“Never stop learning. Never stop questioning. And never forget that education is not just about making a living but about making a difference,” Sir Sam Jonah said.

The Class of 2025, comprising mainly postgraduate and research graduates, was encouraged to embrace responsibility in academia, industry, public service, and civil society, applying their knowledge and skills to create meaningful societal impact.
