The government has signalled plans to explore a potential agreement with the Republic of Colombia that would allow Ghana to send English teachers to support English language instruction in the South American country.
The Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang announced this during a courtesy call on the Presidency by Colombian Vice President Francia Elena Márquez Mina, who is on a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the existing arrangement under which Colombian teachers provide Spanish language lessons in Ghana could be expanded to allow Ghanaian teachers to offer English language teaching in Colombia.
“Ghana particularly values Colombia’s enduring support for the teaching of the Spanish language in Ghana. A programme that has significantly enhanced institutional capacity and deepened cross-cultural understanding.”
She stressed, “I have also taken note of the graduation ceremony that was held on Wednesday, December 11, for the 12th edition, and I was asking that we expand that path to send teachers of English from Ghana to Colombia, too.”
She also highlighted ongoing cooperation agreements between the two nations in areas such as immigration, sports, and youth development, and called for efforts to build on these frameworks to further deepen the partnership.
She said, “Our two countries have signed agreements and are undertaking joint projects in several areas, including immigration, agriculture, political consultations, air services, education, technical cooperation, sports and youth development.”
The Vice President highlighted the need to explore additional opportunities, particularly in areas such as trade, cultural exchange and tourism, to boost economic growth in both countries.
“Equally significant is the prospect of deepening economic cooperation. Ghana recognises Colombia’s expertise in biodiversity-driven innovation, creative industries and agro-processing. While Colombia stands to benefit from our dynamic investment landscape and growing markets in agriculture, energy and services,” she stated.
She added that the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) had organised a business seminar for a Colombian business delegation accompanying the visiting Vice President, as part of efforts to promote investment and deepen cooperation.
