Morocco set for colourful opening ceremony as AFCON 2025 kicks off

Morocco is brimming with excitement ahead of the opening of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the host nation promising a colourful cultural showcase to usher in the tournament on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

Across Casablanca and other host cities, the atmosphere reflects the country’s readiness for Africa’s biggest football competition. Streets are adorned with team jerseys and paraphernalia, fan parks are fully set up, and supporters are counting down to the opening match.

This marks Morocco’s second time hosting the AFCON, having last staged the tournament in 1988. The 24 participating teams are already in the country, settled across host cities including Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech, Fes, and Tangier.

As part of activities ahead of the opening ceremony, global music stars French Montana and Davido are scheduled to headline a concert at the OLM Souissi Fan Zone in Rabat on Saturday, December 20. The concert is expected to celebrate African unity and cultural diversity, blending urban sounds, Afrobeats, pop, and traditional rhythms to showcase the continent’s musical creativity.

For Moroccan supporters, expectations are particularly high. The Atlas Lions are chasing a second AFCON title, having last lifted the trophy in 1976. Many fans see the 2025 tournament as a crucial opportunity for the national team, especially following recent successes, including their victory in the FIFA Arab Cup earlier in the week.

With football and culture set to take centre stage, Morocco is positioning itself for a memorable AFCON opening as the continent’s attention turns to North Africa.
