The Ho Magistrate Court has remanded Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, a driver with the Volta Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), into police custody after prosecutors requested the court to defer the taking of his plea in a narcotics-related case.
Dogbey was arrested on January 23, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by the Volta Regional Police Command involving the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Police Intelligence Unit, and the Regional CID.
Police say the suspect was transporting 26 sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp from the Fume enclave through Ho towards Sogakope in a white American Ford Wagon bearing Ghana Health Service inscriptions.
According to prosecutor Sergeant Micheal Kadey, the suspect allegedly failed to stop at the Ziave Police Checkpoint, leading to a chase before the vehicle was intercepted near the Tarso Hotel in Ho.
A subsequent search, conducted in the presence of the suspect, revealed over 2,000 wrapped compressed leaves believed to be narcotic substances, with an estimated street value running into millions of Ghana cedis.
When the matter was called, prosecutors requested that the plea of the accused be deferred to allow for the presentation of facts and further investigations. The court granted the request, directed the accused to cooperate fully with the police, and cautioned public servants to tread carefully, given the sensitive nature of their work.
The court took judicial notice of the exhibits as suspected narcotic substances intercepted by the Volta Regional Police Command and remanded the accused into police custody. Dogbey is expected to reappear before the Ho Circuit Court on February 5, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Health Directorate has confirmed in a press release that the suspect is a driver with the Directorate but stressed that it has initiated internal processes, including the setting up of a committee of enquiry, while cooperating with ongoing police investigations.
