The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has awarded a Doctorate Degree to Ibrahim Mahama, a Ghanaian businessman and Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Company Limited (E&P), in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the mining industry and his philanthropic activities.

The honour which was the highlight of the 18th Special Congregation Ceremony of the University had in attendance President John Dramani Mahama, his brother, as well as former President John Agyekum Kufour, who is also the Chancellor of UMaT.

The Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah, giving the rationale for the recognition, said Ibrahim Mahama and his Engineers and Planners mining firm have brought enormous innovation and technology that have impacted mining and mine support services, resulting in job creation.

Both President John Dramani Mahama and former President John Agyekum Kufour congratulated Ibrahim Mahama for his distinguished services to the mining industry and Ghana.

On his part, Ibrahim Mahama expressed his gratitude to UMaT for the recognition but assured to return to UMaT to share his life story.

Born on January 29, 1971, in Tamale, Northern Region, Ibrahim Mahama attended Tamale Senior High School before studying at the College of North West London in the United Kingdom. He later returned to Ghana to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

In 1997, he founded Engineers & Planners, initially a heavy equipment rental and civil engineering firm. Over the years, the company has grown into one of West Africa’s largest indigenous-owned mining and construction firms, employing thousands and undertaking major mining contracts in Ghana and the sub-region, including at Tarkwa and Damang mines.

Beyond contract mining, E&P has expanded into mine ownership, controlling strategic gold concessions such as the Black Volta and Sankofa Gold Projects, strengthening Ghanaian participation in the mining value chain.

Mr Mahama has also diversified into other sectors, including cement manufacturing through Dzata Cement Limited, large-scale poultry production at Asutsuare Poultry Farms, and heavy-duty vehicle distribution via Man Bosch Ghana Limited.

His business leadership has earned him several accolades, including African Industrialist of the Year at the African Achievers’ Awards in London and Mining and Engineering CEO of the Year in Ghana.

He is also recognised for his philanthropic work, including co-founding the Joyce Tamakloe Cancer Foundation, which promotes cancer awareness and health initiatives across the country.
