A solemn vigil was held on Friday, January 23, in memory of Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Journalism student of the University of Media, Arts and Communication–Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ), who lost his life after being knocked down by an unregistered vehicle near the Dzorwulu section of the N1 Highway, close to the school’s South Legon campus.
Nokotey was fatally knocked down by a vehicle on January 19, 2026, around 4 pm, when he was heading home.
The vigil formed part of students’ renewed calls for the construction of a footbridge on the stretch, which they describe as a dangerous crossing point frequently used by students commuting to and from campus.
Speaking to Citi News on behalf of the students, Helen Porsoo appealed to the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, to urgently put safety measures in place to prevent further loss of life.
The Dean of Students of UNIMAC-IJ also called for justice, urging calm among the students.
“Our anger should be directed towards the driver who carelessly knocked down and killed Nelson, and we must pray that justice is served,” the Dean stated.
