A local startup, Miyaka Africa, has launched a mobile app that provides a safe and anonymous platform for victims of sextortion, sexual harassment, and rape to report incidents and access support resources.

The app, developed by three young Ghanaians, including a final year student at the University of Ghana-Legon, with expertise in tech, design, and psychology, offers a range of features, including anonymous reporting, access to scholarships and counselling services, educational resources on online safety and consent, and connection to a
community of survivors and experts.

In a statement, the CEO and Co-Founder of Miyaka Africa said the app is designed to empower survivors and create a safer online environment for Ghanaian youth.

“We recognise that many victims of sextortion and abuse suffer in silence due to stigma and lack of access to support. Our app aims to change that by providing a safe and confidential space for victims to report incidents and seek help,” he said.

Miyaka Africa is working with local organisations, including Tradelio Trading Technologies, to raise awareness about the app and its services. The startup is also exploring partnerships with government agencies and NGOs to expand its reach and impact.

The launch of the app comes at a time when Ghana is grappling with the issue of online abuse and exploitation.

According to UNICEF Ghana, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys experience sexual abuse, with many cases going unreported.

The Miyaka app will be officially launched in March.
