A Council of State Member for the Ashanti Region, Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, has defended Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene against criticism from former Kumasi Mayor Sam Pyne, urging the public to judge leaders by projects delivered rather than political rhetoric.
In a statement titled “Substance Over Spin – ‘TikTok’ to Tangible Results,” Mr Obimpeh dismissed former Kumasi Mayor, Sam Pyne’s mockery of Dr Amoakohene as a “TikTok minister,” describing it as politically misguided and downplaying the region’s ongoing development efforts.
He emphasised that modern governance requires accessibility, visibility and engagement, which should be seen as essential leadership qualities rather than trivialised.
Highlighting measurable achievements under Dr Amoakohene’s leadership, Mr Obimpeh cited the advancement of the Aputuogya 24-hour market initiative, ongoing work at Sewia and Afari Military Hospitals, redevelopment at Krofrom Market, and upgrades to bridges at Mpasaaso, Kotokuom and Jacobu. He also noted road and drainage improvements in Kaase and Ahodwo.
Beyond infrastructure, he praised innovative governance approaches, including engaging Senior High School students to beautify major interchanges at minimal taxpayer cost, describing it as a model of inclusive and cost-effective development.
Contrasting this with past administrations, Mr Obimpeh raised concerns over cost efficiency and project prioritisation, while addressing recent allegations of misconduct by calling for restraint and due process. He stressed that leadership should not be judged in the “court of propaganda” but through credible institutions.
He also dismissed perceptions of arrogance in Dr Amoakohene’s style, framing it instead as youthful dynamism, confidence and accessibility.
Concluding, Mr Obimpeh urged Mr Pyne and other critics to “compare records, not rhetoric,” and to prioritise unity, delivery and progress in leadership.
The statement adds to ongoing debates in the Ashanti Region over leadership style and development outcomes.
