Dr Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that Ghana is expected to receive additional aircraft for the presidential fleet by November 2026, including one dedicated to the President’s travel.
In an opinion piece issued on Sunday, March 15, Dr Mahama said the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation capability under the ongoing retooling of the Ghana Armed Forces.
He explained that once the new aircraft are delivered, Ghana will again be able to rely fully on its own state assets for the safe and efficient transportation of the President.
The clarification follows public concerns over the President’s recent use of a private jet belonging to his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for official travel.
Dr Mahama noted that the arrangement is temporary and would no longer be necessary once the additional aircraft are added to the presidential fleet later this year.
“Plans are already underway to strengthen Ghana’s presidential air transport capability as part of the broader retooling of the Armed Forces. By November this year, the country is expected to have additional aircraft within the presidential fleet, including one dedicated to the President’s travel,” he said.
He added that the development would enable the state to rely on its own resources for presidential transportation and avoid the need for temporary arrangements that have generated public debate.
Dr. Mahama also indicated that President Mahama remains mindful of the cost of governance and the economic pressures facing Ghanaians, stressing that decisions about official travel are often weighed against the need for prudence in the use of public resources.
According to him, the government’s broader reform agenda seeks to strengthen state institutions and improve systems that support governance, including state aviation capabilities.
He said the acquisition of the additional aircraft would help ensure a more stable and self-reliant arrangement for presidential travel as the retooling of the Armed Forces continues.
