Ghana's ambulance system under structural neglect

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed concern over the high number of malfunctioning ambulances across the country.

According to him, Members of Parliament have been compelled to use their own funds to repair broken-down ambulances in their constituencies.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, March 17, the Second Deputy Minority Whip questioned the budgetary allocations meant for the servicing and maintenance of the grounded ambulances.

“Speaker, In Ghana, emergency care spans from the national ambulance service, hospital accident and emergency units, police and fire service, first post response protocols and community level health facilities, all of which are operating under the conditions of under source resource. They are under-resourced. It’s become chronic, and there is structural neglect.”

Meanwhile The Ghana National Ambulance Service has revealed that processes are underway to procure 400 new ambulances and 500 medical motorbikes to improve service delivery and response times.
