President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Arusha, Tanzania, ahead of the opening of the Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, where he is expected to deliver a keynote address as Special Guest of Honour.

His participation marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first Ghanaian President to address the continental court.

The ceremony will also officially launch activities commemorating the court’s 20th anniversary, under the theme: “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”

Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, President Mahama was received by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kom, alongside other senior officials.

Among them were Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, with additional responsibility to Tanzania, Paul Evans Aidoo, and Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, a Justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court who also serves on the African Court.
Ahead of the court proceedings, President Mahama is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on Monday morning. The meeting is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Tanzania.

The President’s keynote address at the Court is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Ghana time, where he is anticipated to reflect on the importance of strengthening continental mechanisms for the protection of human and peoples’ rights.

President Mahama is accompanied on the trip by his Legal Counsel, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, and Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
