The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for repeatedly increasing electricity and water tariffs whenever it assumes power, citing both historical and recent hikes.

Speaking at the conclusion of the debate on the State of the Nation Address, the Minority Leader recalled that in 2015 alone, electricity tariffs under the NDC rose by 90%, while water tariffs jumped by 88%.

“To go down memory lane, in 2015, we saw electricity going as high as 31% in the second quarter. By the fourth quarter of 2015, electricity tariffs had increased to 59%. In total, under the previous NDC administration, in 2015 alone, electricity tariffs increased by 90% whiles water increased by 88%,” he said.

He also highlighted more recent adjustments under the party in 2025.

“On 3rd May 2025, electricity tariff increased by 14.75%. On 1st July 2025, 2.45%. On 1st October, 2025, 1.14%. On 1st January, 2026, 9.8%.

“That put together a total of 28.14 in electricity tariffs alone. That is the record of the NDC and that is the record the President did not talk about,” he stated.

The Minority Leader argued that these figures point to a recurring pattern of burdening households with steep utility increases whenever the NDC is in power, raising concerns about the party’s approach to managing essential services.
