The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako Mensah, has raised concerns over recent power outages in parts of the country, warning that the situation undermines confidence in efforts to stabilise electricity supply.
His comments follow an announcement by President John Dramani Mahama that about 2,500 transformers have been procured to upgrade weak infrastructure nationwide.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Adomako said while the government’s intervention is welcome, the current power situation remains challenging.
“I am happy if the government is making efforts to improve the power sector and upgrade some of our machines. But currently, until it is completed, the situation is very dire,” he said.
He noted that procurement and replacement of equipment are routine activities within key power institutions such as the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, Electricity Company of Ghana and the Volta River Authority.
“If you go back to the activities of NEDCo, ECG and VRA, the procurement of machines is nothing new. It has been a recurring activity for them. The changing of transformers and other equipment, I don’t think it is something new,” he said.
Adomako explained that transformers and other infrastructure have a limited lifespan and must be replaced periodically to maintain efficiency.
“If transformers are bought at a certain time, they have their own lifespan. So if the lifespan of those machines has expired, they have to be changed. Be that as it may, I am happy that if not for anything at all, some activities are ongoing to upgrade our system,” he added.
Meanwhile, the president noted that the persistent outages are only because the transformers are being worked on and not because dumsor has resurfaced again.
