The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, is encouraging Ghanaians living in Spain to take advantage of a new immigration amnesty announced by the Spanish government.
The policy is expected to grant legal status to about 500,000 undocumented migrants as part of efforts to regularise their stay.
Speaking during an engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Spain, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured that the government will support nationals who qualify to regularise their residency status.
“The issues outlined by the Minister for Foreign Affairs are of great importance. We urge all of you, especially those with the proper documentation, to fully take advantage of the opportunities available. Government will also provide further information, including flyers, to guide you through the process,” she said.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa added that only applicants without criminal records will qualify for the amnesty, noting that arrangements have been made with the Ghana Police Service to support applicants.
“All applicants must provide proof of a clean criminal record. To support this, we have put measures in place for the Ghana Police Service to assist interested persons in Spain in obtaining police clearance,” he stated.
He also provided an update on ongoing efforts to investigate the death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia under unclear circumstances, assuring that the government is pursuing justice.
“If any Ghanaian is attacked, it is an attack on all of us, and I will not hesitate to intervene. That is why, in the case of the Ghanaian student in Latvia who died under mysterious circumstances, we took a strong position and are pursuing justice. We have engaged high-level Latvian officials and will continue to follow the matter closely. The Mahama administration will not tolerate abuse of Ghanaians abroad,” he added.
