Channel One TV Market Price Barometer-April 2026: Tomatoes, cassava among high-priced staples

Household food costs remain elevated across Accra, with key staples showing persistent price pressures and uneven trends across major markets, according to the maiden Channel One TV Market Price Barometer  – April 2026.

The Channel One TV Market Price Barometer is a monthly price-tracking initiative by Channel Business News that monitors average prices of selected commodities across major markets in Accra, providing a reliable snapshot of cost trends, inflation pressures and market sentiment.

According to the maiden household food staples index of the barometer the average market price of imported rice for a five-kilogram bag is GH₵73.50

Local rice per olonka averages GH₵46.50 pesewas, while maize per olonka is priced at GH₵18.25.

Plantain per bunch records an average market price of GH₵56.75.

Cassava per large sack averages GH₵600, remaining one of the highest-priced staples in the basket.

For key cooking ingredients, tomatoes per mini paint container average GH₵122.25, while onions average

GH₵61.25.

Palm oil records an average market price of GH₵36.25 per litre.

Eggs per crate average GH₵51.50, while frozen chicken ranges between GH₵33.40 per kilogram.

The data reinforces a key trend, while some staples show relative stability, high prices for items such as cassava and tomatoes continue to drive household food expenditure.
