Gov’t installs 200 transformers under nationwide upgrade plan – Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has revealed that about 200 transformers have been installed across the country under a broader plan to upgrade and replace some 2,500 ageing units.

Addressing the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, the Minister said the intervention forms part of efforts to improve voltage stability and ensure a more reliable power supply.

According to him, the newly installed transformers are of higher capacity, marking a shift from the commonly used 20 KVA units to more robust systems of 30 KVA and above to meet rising electricity demand.

“Government is addressing this issue head-on by implementing a nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement programme. As an immediate intervention, this month alone, we have installed almost 200 transformers,” he said.

He added that deployment of the high-capacity transformers is being prioritised at key primary supply stations to enhance voltage levels in critical areas.

He cited Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua among locations that have already benefited from the installations, noting that the upgrades in these areas can be independently verified.

The ongoing exercise is expected to ease pressure on overstretched infrastructure and improve the overall stability of power distribution nationwide.
