President John Dramani Mahama says the government is hopeful that the Kasoa–Winneba road project will be completed by the end of 2026 or in the first quarter of 2027.
Speaking after inspecting ongoing works on the major transport corridor on Thursday, April 23, he expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, noting that the project demonstrates the capability of local contractors to deliver large-scale infrastructure.
“I can understand the frustration of commuters on this road, but as the minister said, help is on the way. I have inspected the road, I have seen the progress of work, the quality of work, and I think the contractor has done a good job,” he said.
President Mahama added that the performance of the contractor strengthens confidence in local capacity.
“It reinforces our confidence in the capacity of Ghanaian contractors to be able to do world-class projects like any international contractor,” he stated.
He further indicated that, barring delays, commuters could see relief within the next construction phases.
“The progress of work is good. We are hoping that we should be able to open through this whole stretch from Kasoa to Winneba by the end of the year or at least in the first quarter of next year,” he said.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said government is pushing for accelerated delivery, revealing that efforts are underway to finish the project ahead of schedule.
“I hear the contract period ends in March 2027. We are working with the contractor to actually complete this project this year by 31st December this year, three months ahead of schedule,” he noted.
He also highlighted government’s financial commitment to inherited projects, saying significant payments have already been made.
“You directed that no road project you inherited should be suspended and indeed as I said as of last month you had paid over GHS12 billion to projects you inherited,” he said.
The contractor on the project said work is progressing across multiple sections, with safety measures being prioritised for pedestrians.
“To take care of pedestrians we’ve also made provision for 15 grade separated pedestrian crossings. We have a mixture of underpasses and overpasses depending on the terrain and the security of the environment,” the contractor explained.
He added that construction is ongoing at various stages, including Awutu Bereku, with completion targeted within contractual timelines.
The Kasoa–Winneba road remains a key transport route linking Accra to the Central Region, and its completion is expected to ease congestion and improve travel safety.
