President John Dramani Mahama has outlined an ambitious vision to position Ghana as a leading artificial intelligence hub in West Africa and across the continent.

Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy on Friday, April 24, he said the country is committed to leveraging AI to drive innovation, create jobs, strengthen institutions, and deliver inclusive national development.

“Our vision is therefore clear to position Ghana as a leading AI hub in West Africa and the wider continental region, driving innovation, creating jobs, strengthening institutions and delivering inclusive national development,” he stated.

The President emphasised that achieving this vision will require strong leadership and a clear understanding of emerging technologies at the highest levels of government.

According to him, this informed his decision to organise a National AI bootcamp for ministers and senior government officials, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge needed to navigate the evolving digital landscape.

“This vision requires leadership from the top and that is why I recently packed all my ministers and senior government officials into the National AI bootcamp. That decision was deliberate. Leadership must understand the tools that will define our future,” he said.

President Mahama noted that building capacity among policymakers is critical to ensuring that Ghana can effectively harness artificial intelligence for national transformation.

The National AI Strategy forms part of broader efforts to integrate advanced technologies into governance and economic development, as Ghana seeks to strengthen its competitiveness in the global digital economy.
