The Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) has shut down about eight facilities following a 15-day enforcement exercise in Accra aimed at clamping down on unlicensed operators in naturopathy, homoeopathy, chiropractic care, massage services, herbal shops, and organic product outlets.
Since the exercise began, more than 500 facilities have been inspected, with notices issued to several operators found to be non-compliant. So far this year, the Council has also closed about eight herbal shops and six spas in Accra for operating without the required licences.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, April 23, the Head of Compliance at TMPC, Michael Lawson, said, “So far since we started, we have closed about eight facilities.”
He indicated that the exercise would be extended to other parts of the country to enhance public safety and restore confidence in traditional and alternative medicine services.
Mr. Lawson emphasised that the initiative is aimed at protecting the public by ensuring that only qualified and licensed practitioners provide such services.
He also urged the public to verify the credentials of service providers before patronising them.
“The public needs to check some of these places when you seek such services if they have licences,” he added.
