The National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has called for the immediate interdiction of key officials of the local assembly following the collapse of a building in Accra Newtown.
His call comes after an old school structure near the Experimental Junior High School collapsed on Sunday, March 29, trapping several worshippers who had converted the facility into a makeshift church for a service.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, April 2, Vanderpuye urged authorities to take swift action against the assembly’s engineer and development planning officer, accusing them of negligence.
He argued that the officials, who have been on the public payroll for years, failed in their duty to ensure the structural safety and proper use of buildings within the community.
“Even the Coordinating Director of that assembly must also be questioned. We need to set certain examples to act as a deterrent for others. If nobody is punished for anything, it will keep happening,” he stated.
Meanwhile, nine out of the 20 individuals who sustained injuries in the tragic collapse of a storey building have been discharged from the hospital after receiving medical treatment.
