Founder of the Campbell SVD Foundation, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell has called for unity, discipline, and stronger patriotism within the Black Stars ahead of the FIFA World Cup, urging players to prioritise teamwork over individual brilliance.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Upside Down Show, the renowned Catholic Priest said his hope for the national team is simple: a united squad that plays for the country rather than personal gain.
“I’m praying there’s somebody that will really be united together, that they will unite together and play together as a team, not as individuals,” he said.
Father Campbell, however, admitted he could not confidently assess whether the team has adequately prepared for the tournament, expressing concern about cohesion within the squad.
“I wish we had spent more time together. But I’m hoping the new coach will get them together,” he noted.
He recalled a past conversation with former Ghana captain Abedi Pele, in which similar concerns were raised about the national team’s lack of cohesion.
“Years ago, I remember talking to Abedi Pele… and he said the problem then was we’re not working together as a team, that we’re too individualistic,” he said.
Father Campbell stressed that Ghana’s success on the world stage will depend on collective effort and national pride rather than individual ambition or financial motivation.
“If they play together, work together, do things together, and they play for their country, not for their money, we need more patriotism,” he said.
He added that players should take pride in representing Ghana, describing national duty as an honour that must be treated with commitment and passion.
“That’s what I want from them,” he concluded.
