Asamoah Gyan: Goal against USA in 2010 remains my favourite World Cup strike

Ghana’s all-time top goal scorer, Asamoah Gyan, has picked his goal against the United States men’s national soccer team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup as his favourite World Cup goal because of its timing and significance for Ghana.

The former Ghana national football team striker and captain, popularly known as Baby Jet, made the remarks during an appearance on World Cup Central on Channel One TV on Friday, May 8, 2026.

Gyan reflected on some of the most memorable goals of his career, including his historic strike at the 2006 FIFA World Cup — the first goal scored by a Ghanaian at a FIFA World Cup.

“It’s something that will remain because it’s the first Ghanaian ever goal in a World Cup, which everybody was expecting,” he said.

Although he described the goal – scored against the Czech Republic – as one of his most important, Gyan said his favourite World Cup strike was the extra-time winner against the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

“I think that was my best goal. The timing was on point. It was 1-1 in extra time, everybody was optimistic about how it was going to come,” he said.

“As a striker, that wasn’t my best goal I’ve ever scored, but because of the timing and everything, I would say it was my best World Cup goal.”

Gyan added that his personal best career goal was scored against the England national football team, but insisted the United States strike stands out among the six World Cup goals he scored for Ghana.

The former Sunderland and Al Ain forward remains Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals across three tournaments.

Ghana’s first-ever World Cup appearance came at the 2006 tournament in Germany, where the Black Stars defeated the United States 2-1 in a decisive group-stage match in Nuremberg to qualify for the Round of 16.
