The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has stated that Africa’s economic transformation will depend on the continent’s ability to build reliable, affordable, and integrated energy systems capable of powering industry, innovation, and opportunity.
Speaking at the 3rd Africa Energy Technology Conference in Accra on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, on shaping Africa’s energy future, the minister stressed the importance of moving Africa from a continent that exports raw materials to one that creates value through industrialisation, technology, and strategic energy investments.
“With our abundant natural resources, growing population, and expanding markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Africa has every opportunity to become a global industrial powerhouse, but this will require bold leadership, regional cooperation, and long-term investment in energy infrastructure,” he said.
Mr Jinapor highlighted Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition toward a cleaner and more resilient energy mix.
He said the measures include expanded renewable energy deployment, battery storage systems, mini-grid electrification, gas-to-power modernisation, and preparations toward nuclear energy development.
The minister noted that strategic energy investments would be critical to supporting industrial growth, improving access to electricity, and positioning African economies for long-term competitiveness in the global market.
