President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to commence the Tamale and Yendi water system projects as part of efforts to improve access to potable water in the Northern Region.

The projects are expected to supply about 30 million gallons of water to the Tamale Metropolis and surrounding communities, while additional small-town water systems are also set to be developed.

President Mahama made the announcement on Friday, May 15, during a courtesy call by chiefs from the Northern Region at the Jubilee House.

According to the President, the government is moving into the procurement stage of the projects, which are expected to transform water delivery in the region.

“We’re moving to the procurement stage — the Tamale and Yendi water systems,” he stated.

“With the Tamale water system, the intention is to build a new pumping station at Yapei on the White Volta and produce about 30 million gallons of water for the Tamale Metropolis,” he added.

President Mahama further disclosed that Yendi will also benefit from a new pumping station to provide a reliable freshwater supply to residents.

“Yendi will also have a new pumping station to produce fresh water for Yendi. Other small-town water systems are going to happen,” he said.

The announcement forms part of broader government efforts to address water challenges in Northern Ghana and improve access to essential social infrastructure.

The planned projects are expected to ease pressure on existing water facilities, support urban growth and improve living conditions for residents in Tamale, Yendi and other communities across the region.
