The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed for urgent government intervention to support residents affected by flooding caused by the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam, which has displaced families and submerged homes and businesses.

He described the situation in his constituency as dire, telling Parliament on Thursday, May 28, that he has been “swimming for the past three days” as he assisted affected residents to evacuate from flood-hit communities.

“Mr. Speaker, it hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija Gbawe is under siege,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says at least 85 residents affected by the spillage have been relocated to designated safe shelters.

The spillage, part of routine dam management, led to rising downstream water levels after all five spill gates were opened to manage inflows and protect the dam’s structural integrity.
