The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH¢200 cash reward for residents who provide photographic evidence of individuals dumping refuse into gutters or littering public spaces.

Speaking to Citi News, the Mayor said the initiative is designed to strengthen public participation in enforcing sanitation laws and improving cleanliness in the capital.

He encouraged residents, particularly young people, to support the Assembly by reporting offenders, adding that individuals who submit multiple verified reports could earn additional rewards.

Mr. Allotey warned that indiscriminate waste disposal continues to be a major cause of flooding in Accra.

He explained that residents who capture clear images of offenders and submit them to the Assembly will be rewarded.

“Those who put rubbish in gutters, I am pleading with them to stop. We are also encouraging the youth and anyone in the city looking for something to do. We are paying GH¢200 if you see someone pouring rubbish into a gutter or anywhere inappropriate,”

“Once you take a picture of the person and report to the Assembly, we will pay you GH¢200. If you bring five reports, that is GH¢1,000. If you bring ten, that is GH¢2,000. It can even become a source of income for the youth, helping to monitor the city so people do not dump waste into gutters,”he said.

He added that while the initiative is not intended as formal employment, it is aimed at discouraging indiscriminate dumping and promoting cleaner communities.
