One person is feared dead after being swept away by floodwaters in Klagon following a downpour that hit parts of Accra on Sunday, June 7, causing severe flooding and disrupting movement in several communities.
The incident has heightened concerns over the impact of seasonal rains and flooding in the capital. A vehicle was also carried away by strong floodwaters after the River Klagon overflowed its banks.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been alerted and are mobilising to assess the extent of the damage and support ongoing emergency response efforts.
The overflowing river inundated nearby roads and a bridge in the area, creating dangerous conditions for motorists and residents.
The fast-moving waters reportedly covered portions of the bridge, making it difficult for drivers to accurately determine the depth of the floodwaters before attempting to cross.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV’s Jude Duncan, Deputy Director-General of Operations for NADMO, Teddy Addi Safori confirmed that the organisation had received reports from local officials and was preparing to respond.
“We received a call from the municipal director for Klagon that the River Klagon had overflowed onto the bridge and most vehicles were going through without knowing it was very deep and so it swept one vehicle away and so right from here, we will rush there.”
